Aims

This course aims to provide students with the skills necessary to plan, conduct and execute internal audits and to be able to write effective audit reports and associated nonconformity reports. Successful completion of the course will provide a basis for students who wish to go on to apply for IRCA registration as an SMS internal auditor.

Learning Objectives

Learning objectives describe what students will know and be able to do by the end of the course. On completion, successful students will be able to:

  • Explain, with reference to the Plan, Do, Check, Act model, the purpose and structure of BS OHSAS 18001 requirements and 18002 guidelines;
  • Explain the principles, processes and selected techniques used for the assessment and management of risk, including the significance of these for OH&S management systems auditors;
  • Describe the responsibilities of an internal auditor and describe the role of internal audit in the maintenance and improvement of management systems, in accordance with ISO 19011;
  • Plan, conduct, report and follow up an internal OH&S management system audit in accordance with ISO 19011 and by interpreting the requirements of BS OHSAS 18001.
Enabling Objectives

In order for students to achieve the overall learning objectives, they will need to acquire and develop specific knowledge. This is specified below as ‘enabling objectives’ and can be considered as steps to the achievement of the learning objectives stated above. Students will be able to:

  • With reference to the Plan, Do, Check, Act cycle, explain the process-based Occupational Health & Safety management system model for BS OHSAS 18001, and the role of internal audit in the maintenance and improvement of Occupational Health & Safety Management Systems;
  • Explain the purpose of an Occupational Health & Safety Management System and the business benefits of improving the effectiveness of an Occupational Health & Safety Management System;
  • The principles, processes and techniques used for the assessment and management of risk, including the significance of these for OH&S management systems auditors;
  • Explain the role and responsibilities of an auditor to plan, conduct, report and follow up an internal Occupational Health & Safety Management System audit, in accordance with ISO 19011;
  • Describe the role and responsibilities of the auditor at each stage of the audit process
  • plan, conduct, report and follow up an internal audit of part of an Occupational Health & Safety management system based on BS OHSAS 18001, and in accordance with ISO 19011 Skills (to be practised and tested through tasks and in real or simulated audit situations;
  • Determine objectives for internal Occupational Health & Safety Management System audits, including determination of conformance, evaluation of capability, evaluation of effectiveness and identification of potential improvement, and suggest how these different types of audit can contribute to the maintenance and improvement of Occupational Health & Safety management systems.
